The Y Intermediate Program

Welcome to Intermediate gymnastics!

What you will be learning

Our intermediate class will focus on developing our strength, form and flexibility to progress our gymnastics skills. We will start to look at breaking down skills to work on specific techniques and form in order to advance our current level.

What you will need to participate in this class

Attitudes and behaviours

  • A positive attitude towards trying new things.

  • A respectful attitude towards yourself, your teacher and other gymnasts.

  • A responsibility of performing your gymnastics skills safely and as directed by your coach 

This means that you should ask them questions if you are unsure of what to do.


In order to learn gymnastics safely, your coach will ask you and your parents to ensure that the space you are using is appropriate and free from any hazards. 

Any equipment required for the lesson will be communicated prior to or at the beginning of your lesson.

  • Cushions/pillows

  • Training aids, mats and shapes (if you have them)

  • Couches/mattresses

  • Ottomans

  • Soft toys/rolled up socks

  • Masking tape

  • Balls/balloons

  • Skipping rope

Prerequisite skills

  • Basic gymnastics understanding of shapes and skills

  • Spatial awareness (this ensures that you are able to make corrections and feedback from your coach and also ensures that you are performing your skills safety)

What are some of the shapes, skills and exercises we will be performing?

Our goal is to progress our foundational skills of gymnastics by working and developing strength, form and flexibility.

Some skills we will focus on include...


  • Handstand development

  • Bunny hops

  • Jumps (Rocket, straight, star, tuck, straddle)

  • Leaps

  • Tuck rolls to stand 

  • Cartwheels

  • Bridges 


  • Front, Back and Side support

  • Dish and arch shape

  • Push-ups

  • Sit-ups


  • Skipping

  • Jogging

  • Running

  • High knee running


  • Splits (front and middle)

  • Shoulder flex

  • Back mobility


  • Arabesque

  • Passe

  • Hop – multidirectional


By the end of each class, I should have...
